The FHWA has indeed adopted a speed limit sign *similar* to the international standard.  The idea was to distinguish the metric speed limit sign from the non-metric one.  The disappointing aspect is that the circle is black rather than red.

I would think that means 30 km/h.  The international signage system should specify the strict use of metric units if the signs are to be used. 

 

I doubt the US would adopt these type of signs.  Canada didn't, but should have, to distinguish the use of metric from FFU.
