I also wrote a letter about a year ago, and explained that the red circle DOES make sense because the sign prohibits driving over the speed limit. I explained that keeping the new signs compatible with already existing international standards has practical benefits, both making it easier for American travelers to adapt to driving over seas as well as easier for foreign visitors to adapt to American driving.

The reply was that my comments came to late.

So why don't we all write and COMPLAIN about the change to black and demand that they return it to red? I have already done so, but no one will pay attention to one measly letter.

Originally, the circle was going to be red, but they changed it, because someone made the suggestion that the colour red was representative of something that was prohibited rather than allowed.

When I saw that the colour was going to be
red, I was very happy since it not only showed
a migration to metric, but also it was
more like the international speed limit
    sign. The change was disappointing.
