I agree with Rob.  It's true that miles, ounces, pints, quarts, and gallons are ambiguous.  However, the inch is very well standardized to 25.4 mm.  Claiming that there is general confusion about the length of an inch loses credibility.  When someone states something as so many ounces, I can in good faith ask "which ounce."  This is not the case with inches or degrees Fahrenheit.

There are valid arguments to put forward supporting metrication - but the case is badly undermined when supported by false claims - especially when they are presented in a supercilious manner.
 
I recommend you study Princep on the how the Liberal minded administration of India in the 19th century brought about its standardisation of measure.
