Racing: Cup takes on greater significance

Jockeys go out for races thinking about their horse and its owners.

It's what they are paid to do.

Two jockeys go into today's $180,000 Canterbury Draught New Zealand Cup thinking of themselves.

But that's not a negative - it will make them even more competitive.

Michael Walker and Allan Peard are desperate for a win aboard their respective horses Woburn and Hootandance in the season's first of the big three metric two milers.

It's been a tough last two weeks for the two.

How long is a metric two miles?  Does anyone know for sure?
