Correct, John. "k" is often used when talking about salaries,or
house prices, in the thousands of currency units.
Another SI prefix you'll hear bandied about is "mega." In a number of
municipal lotteries, one of the game campaigns is called "Megabucks,"
since the prizes are usually in the millions of dollars. My
home state of Texas recently joined a multi-state lottery called
"Megamillions,", which is an exaggeration, since it will probably never offer a
prize over one billion dollars <grin>.!
