The law creating the dollar coin also specified that the dollar bill would continue.  (Jobs at Bureau of Engraving and Printing combined with Americans not liking change, and voting out people that bring about change.)  Had it been discontinued we wouldn't be having the golden dollar lack of use problem now.  No other country keeps both paper and coin in the same denomination.

Not using degrees Celsius is the same as when they made the "golden" dollar here. Why would anyone use a heavy coin when there's still a paper note available? People don't like change (pun intended!).
No one will use metric here unless they get rid of the old units first. If it's the only thing available for use, then people will be forced to learn and use it.
This is very frustrating to me, because the answer is so simple.
