Title: Re: [USMA:33166] Re: rule of thumb
Dear John, Norman, and All,

Another way of looking at this is to use what I call the '10 - 11 - 12 - 13 rule' that goes like this.

10 metres               is about 11 yards            (= 10.936 yards)
10 square metres   is about 12 square yards (= 11.960 square yards)
10 cubic metres     is about 13 cubic yards   (13.079 cubic yards)

John,

I would say that  a yard has 36 inches and one meter (1000mm) has 39.37 inches.  So 36.0 inches is 91.44% of 39.37. Put another way, 39.37 is 109.36% of 36.0.  Assuming that you don't need to be precise and that you don't need or want parts of a whole percent,  9.0% or 10.0% seems pretty close.

Subject: [USMA:33165] rule of thumb

I have a  question. Would a good rule of thumb for converting yd's to m be yd's minus 10  percent = m? I no this isn't very accurate and couldn't be used for  building but maybe be alright for conversion in every day use. Does anybody  know in catalogs when the dimentions of furniture or appliances or  anything else are the dimentions exact or approx? Thanks for your time and  help. I really enjoy this site a  lot.
