John,
It would not be illegal to sell a jar for canning that is 500 ml vs. a pint. The law regulates the amount of a product sold in a jar rather than the jar itself. Remember, the FPLA regulates very specific products while state law regulates other products not mentioned in the FPLA. Canning jars are not included. Anyway, the poster (Tasty Alien) stated that he bought jars that were marked both ways, in metric, up to 500 ml and in customary up to 16 oz. This is the way most bottles and jars used for filling are marked. I hope that answers your question.
Phil

Hello there was a posting on this site last night from a person who went in to their local walmart and bought some canning jars. They said that the box of jars said 1 pint or 500 ml. In the States a pint is 473 ml. is this company breaking the law by calling 500 ml a pint. What would happen if lets say a butcher sold a lb of meat and on the package put 500 g after the lb marking on the package. Would he or she be breaking the law? It would be interesting to know how long these jars of 1 pint or 500 ml have been for sale in the States. |
