What many people don't realise is that when HMG forbad the litre for sale of draught beer they were not exercising the rights that they negotiated with Europe. The directive has a clause allowing the pint for beer and milk but doesn't prohibit metric.

So when publicans are told that cannot server beer in 500 ml glasses its Britain that is being restrictive not the EU.

I bet if the UK had simply kept the pint whilst allowing x * 100 ml sizes as well then the latter would be in fairly common use by now.

You'd be a very poor man!

However you are correct in pointing out that there is an absurd rule in the UK that forbids the use of litres/ half-litres for the sale of draught produce.
