This is where my gripe is. I've only heard this claim on websites
[snip]
Unless I hear a "real person" suggest this then I just don't buy it.
No offence meant by "real person" but I'm sure you recognise what I mean.
Yes I recognise what you mean but I don't understand why you ignore
reasoned argument. Why does everything have to be justified in terms of
what people actually do according to your observations?
In the process of opinion formation I have find myself holding the opinion
that people are a good yardstick (metrestick, whatever) of what is natural
and best, especially when given the maximum choice.
This leads me to be in favour of both imperial and metric, dependant on what
the individual chooses and for that particular application of it under the
perceived benefit of it being best practice at that time.
IMHO there is nothing wrong with that - and I find myself perplexed why
someone might be against a free individual using a metre or a yard in their
application.
The only exception being that of safety - where responsibility needs to be
in the hands of some form of limited authority.
I'm sorry that you think that I ignore reasoned argument - personally I like
to argue about this (within the reasons of not becoming a fantasist or
insisting that there's a war to be won).
Personally the main "unreasonableness" is where the state decides how I buy
my apples - and that has very little to do with whether that is in imperial
measures or metric.
