Yes, sorry, - you are right - km does get used in many sports (as does metres). Also there are "5K runs" and "10K runs". I was talking about common parlance - and made an oversight about those interested in certain sports.

In reality almost no-one uses kilometres, very few express walking distances in metres, practially no-one measures themselves in anything other than feet/in st/lb.

The kilometre is being used increasingly now in sport and fitness activities. Usually referred to as walking or cycling so many 'k' I have heard people refer to thier weight in kg, I admit it isn't common but it isn't unknown either.
