I bought shoes (there's a shoe store two blocks from where I often buy food on
Sundays). Before I went there, I measured my foot as 220 mm * 95 mm, and
brought the tape. Many, but not all, of the boxes have centimeters marked on
them, all in uppercase. But none have the width indicated in metric. There's
also a number which appears to be millimeters next to the letter J. Not
knowing the width, I tried on one after another and found a J260 that fits.
The bottom of the box has a chart, according to which Japanese 260
corresponds to 27.5 cm. Any idea why the offset?

Below the chart is a "legend" giving the names of various materials and parts
of a shoe, seven in all, in seven languages. For some reason the Greek is
completely deranged from the rest.
