Title: Re: [USMA:35502] Interesting things at the US-Canada border.

Southbound on Autoroute 55 in Quebec, Vermont-bound, no wombat signs at all.  Once across the border into the USA, the wombat signs began.

Northbound on I-87, as soon as we passed the border at St-Bernard-de-Lacolle, all the signs were metric only; in fact, there were two large warning signs, in English and in French:  “OUR ROAD SIGNS ARE METRIC” and giving a quick conversion.  After that, no wombat at all.

The only concession I’ve seen are freeway signs in Montreal that direct people to the “U.S.A.” (rather than “E.U.”), and which show “[Autoroute 15 symbol} VERS/TO [Interstate 87 symbol]”, to help the wayward Americans find their way out.

Remek, I think these may be courtesy signs, since the road is approaching a border crossing. I know that at the US/Mexico border there are signs in km and km/h as you approach the crossings, as well as signs in English and Spanish warning of the last exit before you must cross the border. There are also signs warning you that (unless you have the proper hunting permits) guns are illegal in Mexico.

I live in Upstate New York, and my typical trip to Canada takes me either across the Rainbow Bridge (Niagara Falls) or Lewiston-Queenston Bridge.  I haven't taken a trip using the L-Q Bridge in a while, one of the reasons being that it had some security-related roadwork having done around it.  As I found out yesterday, the roadwork also included putting up speed limit signs on the Canadian side--all only in MPH.  These continued through the length of the bridge until the US-side border inspection booths.  Also, starting on the Canadian side, there were a few displays flashing your speed in MPH back at you.

I always thought that a lone MPH-only sign on the Canadian side of the Ambassador Bridge (Windsor-Detroit) was an anomaly.  Anyone else see these "joyful reminders" of the US at other border crossings?
