I made an error in an earlier posting.

I said that the BIPM brochure did not refer to the spelling of metre.

In fact they do, in the preface. See the preface on page 89 of the print copy (or page 9 in the pdf) of the 7th Edition 1998 edition, where it says:

A point to note is that slight spelling variations occur in the language of the English-speaking countries (for instance, "metre" and "meter", "litre" and "liter"). In this respect, the English text presented here follows the International Standard ISO 31 (1992), Quantities and units.

I would like to thank Gary Brown for politely pointing out my error.
