Just heard an ad on TV from ExxonMobil (what a
name!) with a foreign woman's voice (East Indian, it seemed) talking about a
future vehicle when I caught the phrase "50 kilometers" from the kitchen where I
was working. (Not sure of the context because I was in the other
room.)
Maybe the marketeers think that using SI with the
American public sounds futuristic and "cutting edge", but I think that's a fine
reason to push metric in the public's consciousness.
The change in Coke bottles is yet another sign how
willing (or ready) most US companies are to switching to metric-only packaging.
I suspect a Democratic Congress will be more likely to amend the FPLA than the
current Congress ever was.

sold in metric sizes.
Hmm must have had my head in the sand on that one. Still it's
nice to find it there.

Mike,
the 500 mL Coca Cola size has been with us for some time. Coca
Cola seems to like the metric system in the U.S., even expanding its
product line to 3-liter bottles some time ago.
I agree with you
that Coca Cola should adopt a 600 mL size. During National Metric Week, I
sent your 600 mL suggestion to Coca Cola's Director of Public Affairs in
Atlanta. I suggested that, if they really mean to use the metric system,
then they should switch to round metric sizes. The 591 mL seems to be
a size determined by market forces, so I urged the company to round it to
600 mL.
Sorry to say, I have not yet heard back from Mr. Downs of
Coca Cola.
