Compel the federal government to act? Lots of luck. A major change of administration in two years might be helpful, but even then don't count on it. And let's face it, there are more pressing things, like global warming, a decent health care system, andonandonandon........

But US influence in the world is gradually waning, and perhaps in another 50 years or so things will turn up.

Which brings up a question.  How do we compell the Federal Government to
start (re-start) metrication efforts?
