I believe they have this in Europe as well. My TomTom GPS navigation system will tell you when you are approaching one (as a for-fee service) so that you will know to slow down.
Ontario used to have photo radar, as it was referred to. It was very unpopular, and even the radio stations would announce on their traffic reports the locations
of photo radar vans, if they were spotted. They were eliminated as part of a campaign promise by Mike Harris.
