It would be difficult to make a backwards adjustment now because many tracks have been constructed to be 400 m around. Even the local small high school has a 400 oval (although the contractor screwed up and measured the 400 m at the curb instead of the required 30 cm or so out from the curb where the runners' feet land! I used to coach there and am one of the few who know this tidbit....)
