Also, tracks were rebuilt (extended) to provide for the 100 m straightaway dash 
from the 100 yard.  People also forget that the 400 m is very close to 440 
yards which is a quarter mile; 800 m is about 880 yards which is a half mile 
etc.  I've set the navigation system in my car to metric since it's easier to 
estimate close distances  and to use.

  It would be difficult to make a backwards adjustment now because many tracks 
have been constructed to be 400 m around.  Even the local small high school has 
a 400 oval (although the contractor screwed up and measured the 400 m at the 
curb instead of the required 30 cm or so out from the curb where the runners' 
feet land!  I used to coach there and am one of the few who know this 
tidbit....)
