In ISO dates the slash (/) is used to indicate "to" for ranges. For
example, one might write June 18/22 to indicate the period June 18 to
June 22. This may be a related usage.

Did they mean "8 to 9 millimeters", or did they mean "eight ninths of a
centimeter", which is about 8.9 mm?
