Dear Ezra,

On a similar theme you might be interested in this article that appeared in 'The Age', a Melbourne daily newspaper, this morning. It is at: http://business.theage.com.au/theres-no-comfort-in-fools-gold/ 20080213-1s3v.html but be aware it does not specifically contain anything about the metric system or metrication.

I was particularly struck by this paragraph:

Take, for example, some of the dramatic industrial changes in the world's largest economy. According to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics, the US now has more people dealing cards in casinos (82,960) than running lathes (65,840), and almost three times as many security guards (1,004,130) as machinists (385,690). US manufacturing sector jobs have been halved, but the decline in Australia has been greater.

Cheers,

Pat Naughtin

I agree, Paul.

As this article from Georgia Tech shows, we have to "get our act together" over here or we can kiss our standard of living good-bye.

Rocky, the advancement of U.S. science ought to remain non-partisan.
In fact, the two co-chairs of the ScienceDebate2008 Steering Committee
are of opposite political parties. People throughout the political
spectrum depend upon science. This is a discussion that all the
presidential candidates need to join. The issues discussed must go
beyond the hot-button ones. The need for improvement in this Nation's
science capabilties is as pervasive as SI itself.

You shouldn't find any Republicans candidates at the Science Debate. Why would a conservative come to be scolded by a room full of eminent liberal scientists if he does not agree that: (1) global warming is caused by industrial nations, (2) every schoolchild needs to know that man evolved from primordial soup, and
(3) there is an urgent need for increased Federal funding.
