Think about it Stan. In exponent notation, there's only ever a single digit,
between 1 and 9, to the left of the decimal point.
 
Therefore the number of decimal places is one less than the number of
significant digits.

Thanks for the reply. Are you sure you do not means decimal places? That's
the only thing my Excel does and moreover it does it for selected cells
only. Not automatically for the whole sheet. Please be more specific -
spec'y clicks like for a total amateur.
