If Heinz USA considers going metric-only, its Canadian division, H.J. Heinz Canada Ltd. might have some work to do on metric labeling also. While Canadian Heinz products such as ketchup and salad cream are labeled metric only, their tinned soups, beans, and spaghetti products use dual measurements including even ounces. Heinz tinned soups sold in Canada are labeled "10 fl oz 284 mL". Tinned spaghetti and baked beans are haphazardly labeled "14 fl oz 398 mL", or "14 oz fl 398 mL", or "14 oz liq 398 mL" depending on variety of product. The labels indicate H.J. Heinz Canada Ltd. of North York, Ontario as the origin and contain the obligatory bilingual English/French labels. The dual measurement labels suggest these products might be intended for both domestic Canadian sales and export sales, but to my knowledge these products are not exported to the States. Major grocers here in the Northeastern US often stock Heinz beans, soups, and spaghetti imported from the UK, not Canada. Perhaps Heinz Canada exports these products to the Caribbean and/or Bermuda? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael J Barnes Massachusetts USA --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your company has been a leader in marketing its products in units of the metric system of measurement. As early as 1974, many years prior to the federal requirement for dual-unit (customary and metric) labeling, you were doing it! Those of us who support U.S. metrication know your name very well. We urge you to accelerate your metric leadership t as follows. Should the federal Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA) be amended to allow U.S. manufacturers the option of labeling their products in metric units only, we hope you will consider dropping the customary units from your famous ketchup bottle and labeling its weight at an even 400 g. Many U.S. foods are now marketed in even metric sizes, mainly as a result of importation from metric countries. However, Heinz, as a U.S. company, could lead the way in making this simple, low-cost choice of giving us "grams and grams of that great ketchup!" SI-incerely, Paul Trusten, R.Ph.
