Here's a NY Times article by Ken Chang on Pluto, and his role in the planet controversy. The article itself makes no reference to metric, but search for the word metric through the reader comments. Some guy makes a wise crack about how the people who demoted Pluto must be the same crowd pushing the metric system (hope so, since they seem to get their way). Then three other people chime in to defend metric, and express frustration at the backwards US system.
To me, this makes a couple of points. One, educated scientifically oriented people tend to favor conversion (like Obama and his CTO, we hope). Two, we have a lot of potential supporters out there who are not effectively organized.
