I emailed him the sample problem worked both ways and wrote the equation out converting all units to something coherent, then cancelling factors. That didn't convince him. Then, after class, I wrote the conversions from acres to square meters (4×10^3) and from inches per hour to meters per second (7x10^-6) and multiplied them to get the conversion from cubic feet per second to cubic meters per second (28×10^-3). Then he understood. I actually wrote a few more sig figs to show that they aren't exactly the same. I also sent him the derivation of Manning's formula. It'll take him (and me) a while to digest it.
