Dear Paul Carpenter,

Firstly let me offer my sincere congratulations on your article,
Inching our way to a metric system,

that I found at: http://www.mcall.com/news/all-carp1-qt.7040681oct02,0,2121034.column when I was alerted to it by a member of the United States Metric Association.

I found your article to be well-researched, carefully analysed, and clearly written.

As a second point, I would like to comment on your thoughts about the cost of non-metrication in the USA. This subject is not well researched so when I visited the USA two years ago, I gave some thought to this issue – the results amazed me. See http://www.metricationmatters.com/docs/CostOfNonMetrication.pdf for my thoughts on this. You might like to share this with Rep. Charlie Dent if, as you say, he is concerned about the cost of metrication.

Thirdly, and finally, you refer to George Washington's promotion of fair and honest measurement for the USA. I believe that Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin also played a major part in the development of the metric system, not only for the USA but also for the rest of the world. Go to http://www.metricationmatters.com/who-invented-the-metric-system.html and search for Franklin, Jefferson, or Washington.

Again, congratulations on your article – I note you mostly got a positive response in the comments.

Cheers,

Pat Naughtin
