Fair point, and to test I turned the lap top I'm using (a Macbook Pro 16:9) 90
degrees clockwise and - yes - the screen, as a page, looks a tad skinny. Almost
like a 'small broadsheet newspaper', if that makes sense.

Ah, but the screen isn't 16:9, as it turns out. Various blog posts (such as
http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2010/01/28/ipad-43-screen-bad-movies-good-books-web/
) have pointed out that the aspect ratio of the 1024 × 768 screen works out to
be more like 4:3 (think analogue TV) rather than today's dare-I-say trendy 16:9
widescreen. But, given that Web browsing and e-book reading are two of the
things this device is made for, that make a lot of sense (otherwise, things
would look quite skinny when read in portrait orientation in a 9:16 format).
When I saw the half-inch thick measurement of the iPad, the thought occurred to
me that the industrial designers in Cupertino weren't carefully plotting out
this thing in nice round-number millimetres. His Steveness probably offhandedly
said, "Make it a half-inch thick," and, well, you know—whatever he wants, he
gets. :-)

On the news here in the UK they say its 10 inches - however this is likely to
be the diagonal measure - the screen is likely to be 16:9 ratio so I guess it's
time to check up with Mr Pythagorus ! ;-)
