Like many words 'metric(s)' has a number of meanings.  I use it in the broader 
sense at work.  For instance comparing performances of different system - we 
make clear what the different metrics are.  And all without an inch or 
millimeter in sight! :-)

 

Similarly Imperial or Empirical have various meanings.
