Hey - you don't *have* to disagree between those who have different
preferences! ;-) ;-)
In fact we have agreed a few times in the past - just don't tell anyone :-)

I am inclined to agree with Steve (Do you
hear that Steve?). For example, one of the metrics of computer programming
productivity is the number of lines of fully debugged and test code that a team
writes per day. A metric of an academic’s productivity is the number of
peer-reviewed papers published per year. This is of course not the place to
discuss whether or not these metrics are appropriate.

– a broader definition?

Like many words 'metric(s)' has a number of
meanings. I use it in the broader sense at work. For instance
comparing performances of different system - we make clear what
the different metrics are. And all without an inch or millimeter in
sight! :-)

Similarly Imperial or Empirical have various meanings.

Dear All,

What do you make of this definition?

Metrics - A
metric is a standard unit of measure, such as meter or mile for length, or gram
or ton for weight, or more generally, part of a system of parameters, or
systems of measurement, or a set of ways of quantitatively and periodically
measuring, assessing, controlling or selecting a person,..

It is from http://www.tutorvista.com/ks/online-metric-unit-converter
