Metric only labeled products from outside the US is a blessing to get the
US to go metric.
    Great move!

The NIST permissive metric-only press release is getting some re-publication
on food industry related sites:

http://www.foodproductdesign.com/news/2010/06/nist--proposes-metric-only-labeling-for-some-products.aspx

Their study showing some grocery stores are selling imported goods with
metric-only net contents (non-compliant with current FPLA) is interesting.
Given FMI's previous responses, I wonder if they will "excommunicate" these
stores for "crimes against humanity." I haven't seen any comments from FMI yet.

Most of the proposed FPLA amendment is what we have seen before. However,
there is a new section described a new coordination and education role for NIST
and the Secretary of Commerce to assist with permissive metric-only labeling.
It looks good to me, but I urge everybody to read the link.

  This link might help:
  http://www.nist.gov/ts/wmd/metric_062310.cfm

Also note there are two more links at the bottom of the article referred to
above. One is an interesting survey of things in the marketplace current
labeled in metric only (not sure they all fall under UPLR. A few appear to
fall under FPLA and would be non-compliant). However, their point is that
consumers are buying and not complaining about metric-only labels.

Of course, none of this can happen until Congress modifies the FPLA. The
above makes it look like NIST is preparing to propose that, but the timing or
liklihood remains unclear.
