Today is the anniversary of the adoption of the metric system in France in 1799. Though the idea of the metric system is attributed to John Wilkins, first secretary of the Royal Society of London, in 1668, the first official endorsement of the system took place in post-revolutionary France. The process of deciding on the units of the new system took a long time, and the proclamation finally came on June 22, 1799. Today only three countries -- the United States, Liberia and Myanmar -- insist on using the English system. The public in the United Kingdom also show a degree of attachment to the imperial measurement system.
