80% of statistics are made up, (including this one). You are right. It is hard to determine how much of American industry is metric because nobody talks about it. It might be interesting to follow up on some of the past "company going metric" stories in Metric Today, and see if those companies could tell us anything about their suppliers going metric or put us in touch with them.
