I have written several letters to places that sponsor fun runs and walks or races, asking them to use the proper symbol for kilometer (km) instead of the capital or small letter k by itself. Most places ignored my letters. In one case, I think it was Runner's World magazine, they actually mocked my letter, making it sound like I was the one divorced from reality. I think would help STEM students a lot to see more correlations between things that are already metric in society and the metric they see in their science classes, but so far road race sponsors seem to have no desire to follow the proper rules for SI usage.
