I have written several letters to places that sponsor fun runs and walks or
races, asking them to use the proper symbol for kilometer (km) instead of
the capital or small letter k by itself.
Most places ignored my letters. In one case, I think it was Runner's World
magazine, they actually mocked my letter, making it sound like I was the
one divorced from reality. I think would help STEM students a lot to see
more correlations between things that are already metric in society and the
metric they see in their science classes, but so far road race sponsors
seem to have no desire to follow the proper rules for SI usage.
