Hi Mark,

May I suggest that you illustrate the importance of capital and small lettered
prefixes by quoting the power of a typical hearing aid as about 1 mW and the
power of a medium-sized office air conditioning as being 1 MW!

I have written several letters to places that sponsor fun runs and walks or
races, asking them to use the proper symbol for kilometer (km) instead of the
capital or small letter k by itself.

Most places ignored my letters. In one case, I think it was Runner's World
magazine, they actually mocked my letter, making it sound like I was the one
divorced from reality. I think would help STEM students a lot to see more
correlations between things that are already metric in society and the metric
they see in their science classes, but so far road race sponsors seem to have
no desire to follow the proper rules for SI usage.

Isn't a capital letter "K" by itself Kelvins?

Yesterday 28 Sep 2018 while peddling home from work through Bush Park,
a group of high school runners pass me going in the opposite
direction. I catch a conversation snippet from a young man, “one mile
left up that way” or something like that. Then, about thirty meters
beyond that, I notice a temporary event sign indicating distances in
kilometers. I just HAD to take a picture! I assume these runners are
participants in this event. I am saddened that these high school-age
runners default to legacy units in conversation instead of embracing
the units of their own event. I peddle my bike back and forth to work
through Bush Park five kilometers each way year-round rain or shine.
