Hi all,

I'm trying to run benchmark_tx.py on an E100 (rev.3). When I do, I get a bunch 
of "S" symbols printed to the screen and nothing shows up on the Spec Analyzer 
except a CW that appears for an instant and then dies. The reported sample rate 
is 800ksps. I'm not sure what's going on. Here's the command I used:

./benchmark_tx.py -f 910000000 --tx-amplitude=0.3 --non-differential -v 
--tx-gain=0.0 --args="type=E100" -m bpsk -r 400000

The output of uhd_usrp_probe is attached. This is the e1xx-003 release. uname 
-a gives:

Linux usrp-e1xx 3.0.0 #1 Mon Mar 26 04:45:32 PDT 2012 armv7l GNU/Linux

Luis,

To clarify what you're asking...  Are you looking to perform direction
finding with a phase array, or do you actually mean that you will be
physically stearing a directional antenna?  I will assume you mean the
former.  If that is the case a set of USRP N2xx could potentially work.
Or you can use a single USRP with the pseudo-doppler technique, as shown
here:

I saw the video you sent in the reply. I thought there was an easier way to
do it..


The target signal source will be around 700Mhz and 1.2Ghz .. but for
testing I was thinking on 2.4Ghz.


I've done two simple experiments with Bluetooth and with WiFi.

In both experiments I used the protocol's stack to get the signal strength
and a "tin foil directional antenna" sized according to the RX antenna tip.
It worked accurate enough, giving me higher RSSI values when pointing the
antenna directly to the router (TRX) vs lower RSSI values when pointing it
exactly backwards to the TRX.


For the "real deal" I was thinking in applying the same principle.


I have a USRP1 and a B100 and a DBSRX2 (v1.1), a WBX and a RFX900 to work
with. Why did you suggested the N210?

We've seen this on some E100's and are working on the issue.

If you're just interested in RSSI values, you can do a power
detection on the incoming I/Q valudes: 

DECIMATE(LOW_PASS(I**2+Q**2))


This gives you an uncalibrated signal strength indication that is
reasonably linear in power.

Hi Josh,

I tried your suggestion about flushing with zeros and not setting the
EOB.  It doesn't help.  I can't do the other suggestions because I
cant get the thing to build correctly in windows.

I'm send bursts every 2 seconds that start at 1ms in length and
increase every time buy 1 ms.  So 4 bursts later, my burst is 4ms in
length.  What I am seeing is that I get nothing until burst 6/7.  What
comes out is a  burst that is 4ms long.  It like the samples are
getting jammed up in a buffer somewhere.

What's an optimal signal length to send out of the USRP1?  Id be happy
to pad my signal with noise so that it can go out over the air
correctly.  There's has to be a signal I can send out that the USRP
will function correctly with.

Thanks a lot for your quick reply!

I did try the installation using the "build-gnuradio" that written by you.
Everything looked fine during installation, except there is the error on
building rtl-sdr "rtl-sdr build apparently failed". It looks like a
separate component. Does it really matter?

I can see that, UHD is installed and gnuradio, as well as firmware. But I
tried to probe the USRP2 device with "uhd_find_devices", still no luck.

Is there any ways that I can identify the problem? Thanks a lot!

BTW, I am using Gigabyte switch, USRP2, Ubuntu 10.04, Gnuradio-3.6.0.

I am not working in Python or C++, to implement anything. I am only using GRC.

If you have installed the gpsdo properly, it UHD will automatically select the 
GPSDO as a refrence - so "default" for the master should suffice. Have you 
burnt the EEPROM?

Also, I may be mistaken but I think you should select MIMO as the time source 
for the slave board.

10 MHz sine wave, amplitude 4.18 Vpp. (There were some adapters in the link to 
Osc)

After setting the J510 jumper, I fed the mboard 0 with GPSDO reference signals. 
However I am still getting this error

UHD Warning:
??? Detected time deviation between board 1 and board 0.
??? Board 0 time is 0.009112 seconds.

??? Board 1 time is 29.012157 seconds.
OUHD source block got error code 0x2
gr_block_executor: source <gr_block gr uhd usrp source (45)> produced no 
output.? We're marking it DONE.


I am only working in GRC, and my understanding is that GPSDO signals should 
synchronize the system, but its not. What am I missing? Many thanks in advance 
for any expert comments.

OK, I will help you to get the correct USRP source settings in GRC.
First lets take this step by step. Tell me this:

How do you want to synchronize the time between two USRPs:
1) Are you using the MIMO cable, do you want to use it to sync time?
2) Or are you sharing a common PPS signal to both USRPs?
2.1) If so, how are you providing that PPS?
