Subject: [USRP-users] Running Ubuntu/UHD from external USB 3 drive
Message-ID:
<[email protected]>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
I am considering installing Ubuntu Linux and the UHD driver on an External USB
3.0 drive (Buffalo Drive Station DDR) rather than installing on an internal
drive. This would allow me to run the software from any PC (without needing to
install a local copy of the OS/driver). This is in regard to using a B210
product.
I know that the Ettus page includes a link for a LiveUSB SDR environment that
could be downloaded and installed. I also know that GNU Radio has an
GNURadioLiveDvd that is a bootable DVD.
The purpose of this post is to find out if anyone has any tips / advice on this
process.
1) My initial thought is that I would not use the LiveUSB download because
the OS is 32 bit and the software might not be the latest. So, I planned to
install Ubuntu 13.10 64 bit, the UHD driver, & GNU radio "manually".
2) I am wondering if anyone has experience running from an External USB
3.0 drive with regard to performance. Given that the USB 3.0 interface is 5Gb
max speed, it seems that performance might be reasonably good if the drive
itself has a pretty good USB 3 design.
a. One application I plan to use is streaming raw RX data to hard drive.
Since my destination for the raw data is my USB 3 hard drive, I know that I
will be limited by the write speed of this interface. However, I'm wondering
by installing the OS & software on this same USB 3 hard drive, I will limit my
performance even more. In other words, would I be better off with the OS &
software running from an internal SATA drive if the application is to stream
B210 data from one USB3 interface to the USB 3 hard drive on the 2nd USB 3
interface?
Thanks.

You are probably experiencing the crash when you try to scan and find a USRP
EXTIO radio in SDR Console.
The trick is you have to run at least one time, the uhd_usrp_probe which is
located in C:\Program files (x86)\UHD\bin\
Once you do that you will see it loads the FPGA image/hex image and displays
info on your B200.
Now you can go back and open the SDR console program and scan for the device
and it will show up.

Is there a programmatic way of detecting when the UHD Host Code is
incompatible with the USRP2/N210/N200 FPGA/firmware load? I'd like to be
able to notify users of my application that they need to upgrade the
FPGA/firmware load on their USRP. I see
(https://github.com/EttusResearch/uhd/blob/master/host/lib/usrp/usrp2/us
rp2_impl.cpp#L394 ) that an exception is thrown, however it is just of
the generic uhd::runtime_error type and I'd like to avoid parsing the
string included in the exception if possible. Thanks.

What version of UHD are you using, and how are you setting up your
streamers?? Are they both part of the same multi_usrp object, or
? different objects?? How are you specifying the subdevs?

On the X300 and X310, you can select the master clock rate that you want,
and the ADC and DAC are clocked at that rate.? 200 MHz is the default rate,
but 184.32 MHz (ideal for LTE and 3G) is also commonly used.? Not all rates
have equally good phase noise and jitter, but most multiples of 4 MHz, 5
MHz, 3.84 MHz, or 4.8 MHz will be very good.? If you have questions about a
specific rate, just ask and we'll tell you if it is a good one.

When UHD starts, it puts out a banner indicating version.
Also, you might want to use rx_multi_samples.cpp as your starting point,
since it's designed for multiple channels.

Hi list,
I have a usrp1 board. whenever I run the command uhd_usrp_prob i'm
getting the below warning
UHD Warning:
Unknown transceiver board ID combination.
Is your daughter-board mounted properly?
RX dboard ID: Unknown (0xffff)
TX dboard ID: RFX900 (0x0029)
And the daughter board is not recognized
I have gone through previous threads for the solution and found this link
http://lists.ettus.com/pipermail/usrp-users_lists.ettus.com/2010-November/000073.html
Can i go forward and make changes accordingly as described in the list or
is there any specific change i should make . Please can somebody's help on
this would be grateful
Thanks in advance

Sandhya,
Try using the following command to reprogram the eeprom:
burn-db-eeprom -A --force -t rfx900

Hi Vladica,
maybe I can be of help:
Searching the UHD source code tree using "git grep SR_RX_DSP0" shows
occurrences in different device drivers; maybe you can refer to these
implementations of register accesses. How register access is done
depends on what device you are using, so stick to the same device line.
Greetings,
Marcus

Also, at the bottom of this page are instructions for just burning the
missing TX ID into the daughterboard:

Hi Marcus,
Thanks for the fast reply, I was searching for a direct access, but it
seems there is no such function in UHD, accessible from the user side.
Anyway, I have already made a function for direct access of the
registers, so it seems I have to use it.

Dear Experts,
I am developing an algorithm that changes the run time 'Gain and modulation
schemes' of a transmitting USRP unit. I would Like to display these changes
via a Waterfall plot for power and Constellation diagram for modulation
schemes.
Is it possible to access GNU radio GUI components like waterfall plot etc
within the code? If yes then please guide me in this regards.
*Information: USRP2*
*DaughterBoard: XCVR2450 GNUradio: InstalledGNURadio Companion: Installed*
Kind Regards
Usman Ali

Hi again,
Just implemented it, but probably it is a good option to have it in the
next releases of UHD, for direct access.

Hi Usman Ali,
GNU Radio is but a framework supplying developers with the means to
connect signal processing, visualization and generation blocks to a
meaningful application; so yes, this can definitively be done, and
it's meant to be done from within your application.
Most probably you'll enjoy reading the Introduction to GNU Radio on
http://gnuradio.org.
Greetings,
Marcus

Dear?Jason Abele
?
Hope everything is going OK with you there.
?I am PhD researcher working ?with
?spectrum sensing in cognitive radio at ?HULL UNIVERSITY ,UNITED
KINDOM ?, using USRP2 as platform(usrp2_RFX2400)?)...
?
I have two requests, I will be so
thankful if you could response to it
First : one of my USRP2 was work in
good condition ?for last ?six month , last week
??never? managed to get it to communicate to the PC. I used
Windows with MATLAB. Unfortunately, connecting the Gigabit Ethernet does not
seem to make the ?USRP2 to respond to the connection: No LED on the
Ethernet connector comes ON.???Although ??I was able
to get the 2 green ?LEDs Lit after Power-up (D and F), still the Windows
Network Control Panel shows that the network cable is unpluged. I tried
multi-times, but still when connecting through a network switch, the port that
the USRP2 is connected remains dead (the LED on the port stays OFF).Also when
ping to usrp2 give me message NO Devive found. So please could let me your
advice
?
Third: sorry again, my colleague also
had own USRP2 and it is? start work only ?as transmitter , but never
manage to used at receiver as before . He also looks for your advice ?
?
?
Thanks in advance
Kind regards

Hi Meftah Mehdawi,
I'm going to go ahead and assume you wanted to address the whole
mailing list and not only Jason Abele (whose name is unknown to me).
To your two requests (you mention a first and a third, I hope I'm not
missing the second):
1. This indicates strongly that something with the ethernet connection
is wrong. From my experience, the most probable problem here is a
broken cable. Please eliminate that possibility by using another CAT6
ethernet cable.
If that does not help, I can only start guessing. Maybe some defective
network equipment damaged the physical interface of your USRP.
Since your device seems to at least boot fine, I think the firmware is
basically ok; however, you can try using another SD card with a fresh
image on it:
http://files.ettus.com/uhd_docs/manual/html/usrp2.html#load-the-images-onto-the-sd-card-usrp2-only
3. Well, this is a very very broad question. There are several
examples for every way a USRP can be used that show how to use it as a
receiver, maybe your colleague should start with looking at one of these.
Greetings,
Marcus
