I don't like "unicode", it sounds like widechar stuff only. --disable-i18n ? according to http://www.google.com/codesearch?hl=en&lr=&q=disable-i18n&btnG=Search it's not completely unusual flag. For example GNU sed has both --disable-nls and --disable-i18n.
