"Fixing" a loose power connection is something of a risky surgery on
a laptop. The power connection is supposed to be soldered on the
motherboard. You can *try* to resolder it, but be aware that you
take a chance of damaging the board further, in which case you really
will have to replace it. Most repair shops aren't willing to take
the risk -- they'd rather replace the board right from the start.

With that said, the instructions for opening up a Compaq 1400 are
here: http://www.compaq.com/athome/support/msgs/1400XL/ch7removal.pdf

Good luck.
