Jetdirect doesn't advertise either, but has no capability for
authentication, other than host limiting, just like LPR.

CUPS can certainly be configured to use SSL.  By default cups will only
bind to 127.0.0.1 for the admin interface, so encrypted passwords isn't
a big deal.
