The songs are AAC which is an MPEG 4 codec and is better than mp3 for
quality, but also has DRM hooks. You can send the songs to other iTunes
computers on your network but not across the internet. You can burn CDs
from the songs, but you can't cross-code them to mp3. You'd have to burn
a CD and then rip it to get mp3. If you have an iPod, it directly
supports AAC files.

I've never used the service, though, so I can't say anything about that.
