Not having researched the issue beforehand, I bought a US Robotics winmodem
(USR5699B) thinking it would be easy to set up linux using dial-up. So
Redhat detected the card, and I foolishly assumed all I would have to do is
configure kppp or wvdial or whatever and I'd be good to go. Not so.
As far as I've been able to discover, there aren't any linux drivers for my
particular US Robotics winmodem, and for most winmodems for that matter.
<sarcasm>hooray for closed-source drivers</sarcasm>
I've checked linmodems.org and a few other sources that Dr. Google so kindly
indicated, but so far no luck. Perhaps I've overlooked something or maybe
I'm just looking in the wrong place, but if anyone knows how to get a US
Robotics Winmodem to work under Linux (if it's even possible), I would be
eternally grateful. (The situation is pretty drastic - I had to put Win2K
back on my other drive just so I could go online. I'd been running strictly
Linux since November.) Maybe I'll just have to go out and buy a real modem.
Thanks
