... I don't know about that shadow stuff, but the /etc/passwd and /etc/group files are in a standard format that won't be any different between distributions.
The format is the same, but the system users and groups will probably have different names and numbers. The shadow files have the password info (unless you disabled shadow passwords.
Don't copy the files from one machine to the other. Instead copy only the lines you need.
