Umm . . . I don't know.  It is a possibility that you haven't put your newly
compiled kernel into it's proper position under /boot.  I would recommend
just renaming your old one, not deleting it.

BTW, I've always named my kernels after the date that I compiled it and
possibly a brief description, then I make a symlink in /boot bzImage >
20031119_apm (for example).  This way I can just change the symlink instead
of renaming 2 files.  Can anyone see anything wrong with that?
