Experience with apt would be gained rather rapidly. Don't discount debian simply on the basis of you not having used it's packaging system before. FreeBSD may also be a good choice still. At $50 bucks a pop and quick accecss to security errata, I'm thinking about going with RHEL 3.0. I may also use WhiteBox linux (a free version of RHEL based on the exact srpms minus redhat trademarks) on a few servers. Since WBEL and RHEL are identical package-wise, security errata from RHEL would apply to WBEL (although according to the support contract, I'd need to recompile the RHEL errata from srpms to install on WBEL -- no big deal). The recent high-profile compromises have really pushed me to consider RHEL. Not that Debian is inherently insecure or anything. It's just that RH has a vested interest in my security, and I trust that they will respond promptly (as they always have in the past). > > I'd like to setup the box and have to worry about it as little as > possible. Would anybody care to offer an opinion? I think I vote for RHEL. Debian is nice, especially if you run non-x86 boxes, but having that support security blanket can be a really good thing. Debian has a good security errata record, but they are community-driven. Also in my experience debian is less polished and does require a bit more work initially to get things the way you want them. And unlike Microsoft's support, Redhat's support is actually worth something, even though I take care of most problems by myself. That's why I think having a mix of RHEL and WBEL will be just fine for my servers.
