I've used (and liked) Mandrake in the past; maybe it's time for another
try. I'm pulling the torrent for 10.0 now.

That's a good point. It's easy to forget how painful those days were.
I heard somewhere that it takes 10 years to come out with a really good
software product; that seems to be the case with things I've seen.
Windows 95 is almost 10 years old, and Microsoft has worked out many of
the bugs (you've had to pay for those fixes every couple of years
though.) The Linux kernel is ~12 years old and is really quite mature.
We just need to work on the desktop for a few more years.
