I was debating whether to respond to this point or not but I think I
should.
Unless I am mistaken, the SSS is an official project of the BYU UUG. We
are producing it, branding it as ours, and distributing it.
From the club charter:
1. Statement of purpose
1. Provide a forum and means for discussion, discovery and
development of Unix and Linux.
Although many of the club members may feel that it is good to try to use
the CD as a missionary opportunity, missionary work is outside of the
purpose of the club. I think attempting to use the club or anything that
directly represents the club as a missionary tool is stepping outside of
the bounds that the charter provides for.
If feelings are strong that the CD should be used as an intentional
missionary tool, which is not how I interpret the Dave's sentence, I
would motion that it be disassociated from the UUG and that we only
reference it inasmuch as it facilitates the club purpose.
If individuals feel that they would like to use it as a direct
missionary tool, I think that is okay as long as they do not in any way
imply that the UUG supports their efforts in that regard.
I would prefer we keep the SSS as a UUG project and not have the club as
an organization endorse or conduct any missionary work using the CD. If,
as implied by Dave's sentence, people choose to make the false
correlation between the CD and the church, that is their choice and as
long as the UUG is not encouraging that behaviour I have no problem with
it.
