Well, the "church of emacs" is a silly thing that Richard Stallman
came up with as a joke, for supporters of GNU (emacs being one of the
original pieces of GNU software).  The connection sort of goes like
this:  GNU zealots prefer Debian, GNU Zealots prefer Emacs, therefore
many Debian users are GNU Emacs zealots.

There's probably something fallacious about that logic, but I've
already forgotten everything from whatever philosophy class that was 
:-)

The correlation also comes from one of the most adamant Debian
GNU/Linux advocates on the list, Michael Halcrow, who also has been
known to support Emacs.
