Thanks for the help Paul.......I slid the tubes out and it was still stuck.  After
a lot of persuading with the hammer on the block of wood I was able to get it
off.  Incredibly pitted and corroded......I'm tempted to replace the stem!  This
is an 85 that I have owned for 6 years and have always kept garaged and out of the
rain........go figure.
