Home-made aftermarkt pipes

I have a friend who is has purchased a 97vmax and has just cut out the 
outermost baffles in both pipes----sounds fantastic now, but will any 
short/long term damage possibly be done? (I was considering performing the 
same work on my 93, just wanted to check with some folks that would know 
before proceeding)
