Gary,

When I installed my Hindle, I removed the plastic shield thing. I have 
since not had any problems with the battery case warping or melting. In 
your situation I suspect that the plastic shield allowed some of the heat 
to build up (poor air circulation) and cause damage to the battery case.

Just a  guess on my part since I have not had any issues and have been 
running the pipe for two years now.
